Sandra Edge Medal added to Silver Ferns awards

Acknowledging one of the greats of the game, the launch of the Sandra Edge Medal will honour the Silver Ferns Player of the Year at the 2023 New Zealand Netball Awards.

The Sandra Edge Medal will be awarded to the Silver Ferns Player of the Year for the first time, the former midcourt great epitomising the spirit, athleticism and sportsmanship associated with the Silver Ferns team.

Silver Fern #75, Edge was a rare breed of player, her energy, spontaneity and free-spirited style bringing a new dimension to how the game was played.

Based on a strong work ethic, Edge set the highest of standards for herself and at the same time breathed fresh life into the game. Edge’s natural exuberance and dazzling skills set the benchmark for future generations worldwide.

She became the 17th captain of the Silver Ferns in 1994 while going on to claim 89 Test caps.

Competing in three World Championships, Edge won the complete set of medals, gold in 1987, silver in 1991 and bronze in 1995.

Celebrating New Zealand’s top-line players, coaches, umpires, administrators and volunteers across all levels of the sport will be acknowledged at this year’s awards in an exclusive special screening live at 7.30pm, Wednesday 6 March on Sky Sport 1.
