On the back of a successful Cadbury Netball Series campaign against the Silver Ferns and NZ Men will meet their Australian counterparts in two curtain raisers during October’s Constellation Cup.
The NZ Men will take on the Australian Men in the Constellation Cup series opener on October 12 in Auckland, going head-to-head in the game prior to the Silver Ferns and Australian Diamonds clash at Spark Arena.
In what is a first for both teams, the men’s sides will meet in the live broadcast curtain raiser of the international Test match between the Ferns and Diamonds before heading to Australia to close out their Trans-Tasman series in the curtain raiser of the third Constellation Cup match in Melbourne.
NZ Men's and Mixed Netball Association President Junior Tana said they were excited to be a part of the Cadbury Netball Series for the Constellation Cup, playing the curtain raiser against their old foe.
“There is always a strong rivalry between New Zealand and Australia on a netball court, and we’re thrilled to be able to work with Netball NZ to bring this match to the New Zealand public,” he said.
“Being able to showcase the men’s game and our skills on the international stage is a privilege and we’re looking forward to building on from the success in last month’s Cadbury Netball Series against the Silver Ferns.”
Tana said members of the NZ Men’s team would compete at the NZ Men’s Nationals in Christchurch later this month before coming together for the trans-Tasman series against Australia in October.
“Following the disruptions of the last two years due to Covid, it’s been heartening to see the opportunities our best players have had with a high performance camp earlier this year, the series against the Silver Ferns and now our trans-Tasman series against one of our toughest rivals,” he said.
“I hope we can continue to build our profile and share our game at the highest level.”
Netball NZ CEO Jennie Wyllie said the curtain raiser match between the NZ Men and Australian Men was following on from the success of July’s Cadbury Netball Series.
“We saw how popular the NZ Men’s team was with the public last month and to be able to see their skill pitted against the Australian Men’s team will only add more fuel to a highly anticipated Constellation Cup between the Silver Ferns and Australian Diamonds,” she said.
“We’re looking forward to hosting both sides in October to again showcase men’s netball in New Zealand.”
The curtain raiser match between the NZ Men and Australian Men’s teams will also be broadcast live on Sky Sport.
