​Applications for Netball New Zealand Youth Board are now open

Are you a leader in your community? Do you love netball? Do you have ideas on how to better the game?

We are looking for the next youth leaders to help guide netball in New Zealand!

The Netball New Zealand Youth Board (NNZYB) is all about empowering young people to share their experiences and passion for netball.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Sharing ideas and experiences in netball
  • Engaging with your local communities to understand young people’s needs and feedback
  • Encouraging participation and performance in youth netball
  • Collaborating on key projects with the other Youth Board members
  • Working with likeminded people to create an environment where youth voice is championed

We are looking for young people who have the ability to work in a team and independently while being proactive and committed.

To be eligible you must be between the age of 15-22 years-old.

Hey, I’m Georgia Trent and I’ve been part of the Youth Board for about a year now. It has been awesome to work with other young people from across New Zealand on how to best engage with our peers to stay involved in sport. It’s been a tough year for everyone, with a lot of us not being able to play in secondary school tournaments but our Youth Board is all about connecting and brainstorming ideas to make netball the best it can be.

Who are we?

We are a group of young people, passionate about Netball in New Zealand. We meet every 2 months to discuss everything netball and to make sure youth voice is heard!

What are we trying to achieve?

Ultimately, we want to champion youth voice. To create positive change we need to hear from you – the people involved in the game! Sport is so important for young people in Aotearoa, so we need to make sure it is enjoyable and fun so people keep playing.

What commitment does being part of the Netball New Zealand Youth Board (NNZYB) involve?

  • Attend (in person or online) meetings
  • Provide and gather feedback from your community
  • Receive and reply to emails and surveys
  • Share information back to your local communities
  • Bring youth issues and opportunities to the NNZYB
  • Assist others to understand youth views

What will you get from being involved in the NNZYB?

  • Connections with leaders in sport, networking opportunities

I’ve been able to work with various member of Netball New Zealand including the Communications and Marketing team, the National Youth Development Manager and the National Programmes Manager as well as connect with other sports organisations like Sport NZ and Equestrian NZ. I even got the opportunity to interview Silver Fern Gina Crampton, All Black Caleb Clarke and Black Cap Tim Southee.

  • Help to shape netball through input on various working parties and/or projects

So far we’ve shared our ideas around student coaches and are planning our projects for 2021

Assistance with transport to and from meetings in the case of in person meetings

During lockdown, I was appointed to the Netball New Zealand Board as a intern where I contribute youth voice to the decision making process. I have learnt so much about governance and the role of that the Board has.
