Reshuffle on Beko League ladder

The arm wrestle for top spot on the Beko Netball League ladder continues with Waikato-BOP resuming ascendancy after five rounds.

That was not where the reshuffle ended with Heller’s Mainland, who had been leading the league, dropping down to fourth spot after the 16-goal loss to the Waikato-BOP in Rotorua on Sunday.

The Northern Comets and Central are both on 14 points with Mainland third (13 points) and the Northern Marvels in fifth.

Waikato-BOP had suffered a seven-goal loss at the hands of Mainland just a week prior but dominated from the opening whistles this time round and led 21-12 heading into the second spell.

They had little trouble finding shooter Kelsey McPhee who put up an impressive 23 attempts in the first 15 minutes. The hosts won the second quarter and finished the match strongly to deny Mainland any chance to picking up a valuable bonus point, winning 66-50.

The Northern Comets and Central share second spot at the mid-way mark of the league after both netting wins in Round 5, and are just two points adrift of Waikato-BOP.

A string of four goals late in the first quarter gave the Comets the impetus to push on, leading 15-7 at the first break.

Goal keeper Chanelle Campbell made an early impact with two intercepts and a deflection which was converted as the Comets limited their opponents to just six attempts in the opening quarter.

There were just a handful of goals between the two teams over the remainder of the match and South, still searching for their first win of the season, will be ruing the slow start eventually going down 45-51.

Meanwhile, a dominating third stanza set Central up for a 52-41 win over the Northern Marvels at Walter Nash Stadium in Lower Hutt.

Just two goals separated the teams at the main break before Central switched gear, winning the third quarter 19-9 for a match-winning buffer.

Goal attack Saviour Tui was a stand-out, sharing the shooting load with Jermaine Howard-Vallance to net 28 of her 33 attempts at goal.
