Pita Pit New Zealand Secondary Schools Netball Champs starts next week
With less than a week to go until the top 16 New Zealand Secondary School teams take to the court in Timaru, we look back on the 26-year history of this annual tournament.
Established in 1993, the Pita Pit New Zealand Secondary Schools Netball Champs is one of the most keenly contested events on the Netball New Zealand calendar.
Coming to this tournament is the goal for the school teams competing in regional events throughout the year.
The top five teams from the Lower North Island and South Island regional tournaments qualify for the national event along with the top six from the Upper North Island tournament.
Over the years there have been teams which have dominated the history books with Mt Albert Grammar School winning the Pita Pit NZ Secondary Schools Champs title five times – including four years running from 2012-2015 – along with three-time champions Auckland Girls’ Grammar School (1995, 1998 and 2004).
Then there are those fairy-tale type experiences that truly capture the imagination of all involved – last year Howick College was the talk of the tournament after they went through the four-day event unbeaten to win the national title in their very first attempt 33-25 against Saint Kentigern College.
This year will not feature any new teams but will be welcoming back schools who have only attended once previously.
Nelson Girls College first made their appearance at New Zealand Secondary Schools Netball Champs in 1997 and with their success in the SISS tournament and will return to the court this year.
Hamilton Girls’ College will also be returning to the tournament having not competed since seven years ago in 2011 where they finished in sixth place.
The New Zealand Secondary Schools tournament has a been a vital pathway for New Zealand’s young players and has acted as a stepping stone for some our most celebrated Silver Ferns including Laura Langman, Katrina Grant and Maria Folau.
The 2018 Pita Pit New Zealand Secondary Schools Netball Champs will take place from 9 -12 October 2018 at Southern Trusts Events Centre in Timaru. Follow our social media pages and website for all the score updates.
